Cresent
Manufacturing Company, based in Gallatin, Tennessee, has a rich
history spanning over fifty years in the furniture business.
Their roots lie in retail furniture. Cresent Furniture
was founded by Charles R. Tomkins, Jr. in 1945 as a retail furniture
store in Gallatin. After several years of searching for affordable,
high quality solid wood furniture for his customers, he set out to
manufacture just the kind of furniture that his customers deserved.
Tomkins hired a few local woodworkers and craftsmen
and began producing a few solid cherry and maple designs - often
crisscrossing the eastern United States with a sample dresser in
the back of his
station wagon, calling on furniture stores to persuade them that
quality furniture was being produced in this sleepy little town in
the Appalachian foothills of Tennessee.
Steady growth ensued, as the Cresent Furniture name
became synonymous with high quality 18th Century reproductions at
fair prices. As the business grew, they added solid mahogany designs
to the collection, offering value-conscious consumers the beauty
and tradition of solid mahogany Colonial furniture that had previously
been the province of the high-end furniture manufacturers. Over the
last ten years, Cresent's line of furniture has grown to include
Art Deco Contemporary, neo-classical modern, 18th Century traditional,
Shaker and transitional designs. Cresent has also added several
collections using Cherry and Walnut veneers at more affordable price
points.
Today, the Cresent furniture tradition continues in
the hands of the second and third generations of family ownership.
They have grown from a small shop
with a few craftsmen into a multi-million dollar business with facilities
in Gallatin, TN and throughout Asia. Cresent furniture is distributed
throughout
the United States and Canada by a network of carefully selected independent
dealers.
